Hi all, Just thought I'd let you know that I have added two new photos to the gallery. One from Patricia - she has made her rose with an antique look and accidentally forgot to reverse the fusible. The other from Wendy who use different fabrics for each leaf.

You can see the effect of how different fabrics can change the appearance.

Posted to: New Photos added Show Thread | Post Reply

Hello and welcome to the classroom! I hope you enjoy this class and visit to the Academy of Quilting.

I look forward to teaching you this fun class where you will learn several different techniques. It is a great starting point to learn different areas you may not have tried before. Also, if you have an animal you would like to include, feel free to. You can swap it out for another. I'm here to help you if need be. The only thing to remember is to keep the block size the same so they all fit together.

We have this classroom open a little early for pre-class chat. It is a good idea to come in and introduce yourselves if you will. I would love to hear about some of your quilting experiences, the classes you have tried or others you'd like to try. A funny story is always welcome too!

I do hope you enjoy this class and have a wonderful time with all the animals and blocks.
Happy Quilting!

Posted to: Welcome Show Thread | Post Reply

Hello and welcome to the classroom! I hope you enjoy your visit to the Academy of Quilting and have fun in class with all the different techniques you will learn.

I look forward to begin teaching you this class. There are lots of different exercises to try. You do not have to try them all, but it is a good time to try different techniques to know if you like them or not. I hope you will use some of them in future projects when making your own unique art quilts. And remember to send us your photos.

We have this classroom open a little early for pre-class chat. It is a good idea to come in and introduce yourselves if you will. I would love to hear about some of your quilting experiences and ideas you wish to pursue in the future. I am busy writing more classes and want to know where your interests lie so I can perhaps accommodate that.

I do hope you enjoy this class and new format.
Happy Quilting!

Posted to: Welcome Show Thread | Post Reply

Well, for the last few days I have thought about letting you know how things are going.
I DID get the fusible strip attached to the bias tape. The bias tape maker worked well for folding the tape but, as you suggested, it didn't perform quite as well when adding the fusible. So, I added the fusible "freehand". Now I need to cut out the remaining pieces, get those attached to the correct colors, and assemble the whole thing. (Difficult to do when you can't stay home during the day...) So, to answer your question, SLOWLY! ;-)
I should get some 'play time' later this week. I will let you know.
Connie

Posted to: How is everyone coming along? Show Thread | Post Reply

Hi all, it would be great to get an update on how you are doing with your project. Is there too much to cover in one lesson or too little? Did you purchase the bias or make your own? It would be great to get some feedback.

I have my bargello circle sewn onto the background and have the circles sewn in the center. After adding the borders, I am going to put the square piece on point and add large triangles on each side. Then I'll add more borders and it will be a quilt for the bed in our camper. The bed is shorter than a regular bed so the quilt will be an odd and smaller size. As you can imagine, this won't be done by the end of the class, but maybe I'll be able to send a photo in the future.
I hope you come up with more Bargello patterns and classes in the future.

Posted to: Finished circle Show Thread | Post Reply

Hello and welcome to the Academy Ginny, thanks for signing. I'm glad to hear you are making some good progress.

I don't know of a tool to use for folding the paper but I find a postcard or greeting card works really well. I align it along the line and then bend the paper over it.

Mariner's Compass is definitely a wonderful block to make and look at. It would look great in the center of a bed quilt with maybe smaller ones around it. Hmmm lots of thought.

Hope you enjoy the class and feel free to send in a photo of what you have done.

Happy Quilting!

Posted to: Welcome Show Thread | Post Reply

Hi there Ruth,
I have made the two blocks to make up a quarter following the paper piecing and using the advanced pattern. It has gone very well with one small hitch where I accidently chopped off the seam allowance when trimming one of the tiny triangles but managed to sort it out. I also have unpicked a couple of pieces but am suprised how easy it has gone together. I used the same colour way because it seemed easier for this project which is in my mind just a practise piece that I will make into a cushion for my partners yacht. I wondered if there is a tool/notion for turning and accurately creasing the paper pattern for trimming the 1/4 inch seam allowance? I feel a thin knife without a sharp edge would do it but dont have such a thing. Excited about this project as I fell in love with the Mariners Compass a while ago, thinking about it a lot then buying a few related books, as I want to design a quilt using it in different forms. Thanks Ginny

Posted to: Welcome Show Thread | Post Reply

I have sent a photo of my finished circle, I am very pleased with how it has turned out. I am planning to make this a twin size quilt so will not be finished before the classroom closes next week. I am going to us the dark green as my border and the light yellow/green as the background. I will be using the leafy green, a pieced strip and the dark green as borders. I am thinking of doing a leaf embroidery for the center but am still mulling that in my brain. Thank you for this course.

Just finished the circle and sent a photo. I'm pleased with the way it turned out. It may look like there is a white fabric in it, but it is a pale green. Now I'm ready to start lesson 3. It has been pouring rain all day today so I got to stay in my sewing room since I got up this morning.

Posted to: Photos Show Thread | Post Reply

I see someone else is using green and brown fabrics. The picture in the gallery looks a lot like the wedges I'm sewing. My circle is half finished. It's taking a lot of time because I am pinning every intersection of each wedge before sewing the seam, but it is working out well.

Posted to: Photos Show Thread | Post Reply

Connie, it is so easy to miss something whether we hear it or read it, that is why it is always good to make comments in the forum(classroom). It often makes us focus on details we may have missed and also helps other students too. Glad you mentioned it - thank you for your update.

Let's hear from other students too, we can gain much reward and learning by sharing our experiences, good and bad.

Happy Quilting!

Posted to: Update Show Thread | Post Reply

Putting it on separately sounds like it might work better! Another thing I 'realized' after re-reading the instructions, YOU DON'T IRON THE WEBBING ON WITH A COTTON IRON! I think that may have also contributed to the frustration. So... (deep breath, relax,) I'll just have to start again with a clearer head! ;-)

Posted to: Update Show Thread | Post Reply

Thanks for the update Connie. When you are making the bias, take your time, the fusible can be a little fiddly to put on. I actually find it easier to put the fusible on separately, so if you keep having problems, try that instead. Good luck!

Posted to: Update Show Thread | Post Reply

Good Morning, Ruth!
I am making my bias. When I had the time, I got the bias cut, then got the first two pieces through the bias-tape maker. The first piece got its web nicely, but the second one twisted, and I ended up with the webbing on the "right" side! So, to avoid further frustration, I put it all aside. I hope to get back to it sometime tomorrow, and I will let you know...
Connie

Posted to: Update Show Thread | Post Reply

How is everyone coming along with their projects? Are you making or purchasing your bias? It would be great to get some conversation going and thoughts on the process and techniques.

One of the wonderful things about making your own is that you can make it in fabrics to suit your project, not so much for stained glass but other techniques. I'm currently working on a project that has bias and it looks so much better using matching fabric.

Posted to: Update Show Thread | Post Reply

I have all my three and a half strips cut and am ready to cut the wedges. My wedge ruler says it is 18 inches, but it only measures 15 inches from top to bottom. However, it seems to fit on the open strip from top to bottom. I guess I can start cutting wedges, but want to make sure. Does the 18 inches mean the finished diameter, not length of the ruler? That seems to be what would make sense after thinking about it for a while.

Posted to: Cutting wedges Show Thread | Post Reply

well have cut and sewn my fabric strips into the bargello blocks and have joined them into tubes now starting the slow process of cutting my strips and then cutting the triangles (for want of a better word). Have 4 triangles sewn together and can start to see the swirl. I brought my blocks to my guild meeting last night and everyone liked my fabric choices, tried to email a picture but Firefox would not cooperate. Well back to the cutting board.

Posted to: Late start Show Thread | Post Reply

To be honest, I really hadn't 'planned' a specific use for any of them! I wanted fabrics that looked good together, then I was going to 'play it by eye', and see which fabrics I like best, where. Is that an unreasonable way to approach it? I usually make my choices up front, then change my mind (assuming there IS one) several times before I'm done. So I thought I would find the fabrics that work together, then place them as I work.

Posted to: Fabrics Show Thread | Post Reply

Hi Connie, your fabrics are beautiful. Are you planning on using different greens for each leaf? I would use the brighter greens for the leaves and perhaps the dusky one (2nd from right) would be more appropriate for the stems. I think your fabrics will work really well and make for a wonderful hanging.

Happy Quilting!

Posted to: Fabrics Show Thread | Post Reply

Good Afternoon, Ruth (AND classmates!)
I have just submitted a photo with my choices of fabrics for the Rose.
Could you please let me know if you see any that 'stick out', or don't seem appropriate?
Thank you,
Connie

Posted to: Fabrics Show Thread | Post Reply

There is an instructional folder with the ruler that may contain that info. I'll look when I get home.

Julia, it will work to make a circular bargello but you will have to use different widths for the bargello strips. How long is the ruler? Can you work out the widths to cut? I can help you if need be.

Posted to: Question about wedge ruler Show Thread | Post Reply

Hello and welcome to the classroom! I hope you enjoy this new format in classes and your visit to the Academy of Quilting.

I look forward to begin teaching you the ins and outs of foundation/paper piecing. In this class you will have two options of a beginner block or advanced block - you may wish to make both. Use the finished block as a wall hanging or center medallion for a quilt. The choice is yours.

We have this classroom open a little early for pre-class chat. It is a good idea to come in and introduce yourselves if you will. I would love to hear about some of your quilting experiences and ideas you wish to pursue in the future. I am busy writing more classes and want to know where your interests lie so I can perhaps accommodation that.

I do hope you enjoy this class and new format.
Happy Quilting!

Posted to: Welcome Show Thread | Post Reply

Edna, your fabric selection is in the gallery. I agree that your greens may be a little dark. Try to imagine how they would be with the black bias around them, they will appear quite dark so when you search in your stash, look for some brights or lights.

Posted to: Fabrics Show Thread | Post Reply

I just sent my fabric selection and it was a good thing that I took the photo as it really showed me some of my choices are not as great as I thought they were. Back to looking at the stash.

Edna

Posted to: Welcome Show Thread | Post Reply
